According to the district, as of Tuesday night 40 percent of the 2,600 members of the teacher bargaining unit (in the Madison School District) called in sick.
"It is expected that this number will continue to increase through Wednesday morning. At this ratio we have serious concerns about our ability to maintain safe and secure school environments."
There are numerous reports of Dept. of Motor Vehicle offices and others being short-staffed for Wednesday, with employees being shifted around the state to cover for absentee state workers. Governor Walker likes to crow that "Wisconsin is Open for Business." However, the new Republican dream-state of Walkertucky seems to be on the verge of shutting down.
A crowd remained at the Capitol through the night on Tuesday to testify against the Governor's budget measures that would eliminate collective bargaining rights for public employees. Republicans terminated the hearing at 3am, but Dems resumed to allow the people's voice to be heard.
It is assumed that the Republican majority in the state legislature will approve Governor Walker's union-busting effort in a vote to be held on Thursday, despite a mass showing of voters at the Capitol in opposition to the measures. Stay tuned. I don't think this fight is over. Not by a long shot.

I hope this doesn't back-fire on the teachers. If the general populous has already turned sour on unions, then they'll just blame the unions for this latest tactic.

Well, sometimes you simply have to fight. Otherwise, it doesn't matter if people are behind you or not. You'll lose by default.
