"Big warning signs for Gavin Newsom in latest California recall poll."
Apparently black conservative Larry Elder is going far in the polls. It would be a trip if he won.

Covid has really strained the appeal of Newsom. It was already impossible for most people to live here and the lockdowns just made it all that much worse. I heard people on Amtrak talking about how much open land was in CA and how it made no sense that there wasn't access to it. Everyone was reading right wing books. I think it's enitrely possible that Republicans could make a surprise comeback.
Covid certainly played a big part in getting Trump out of the White House, but one thing it also did was set up a lot of potential weaknesses for Democrats in someplace like California. The liberal center of San Francisco now seems like everyone there is homeless - with remote work and lockdowns, the tech sector had no reason to stay put. The general population had already been reclining to various suburban or exurban areas over a long period of time.
This is all a recipe for purple politics. Liberalism rocks in big cities.
