It probably helped nudge along feminism quite a bit in its own way - the frat boy surfin'-safari ethos was actually giving way to women who objected to the crass use-and-discard mentality of the time & still today.

Looking at the RottenTomato page for the generally execrable remake of Magnificent Seven, with the red tomatoes being more damning than the green splats, I was struck by 1 review:

Yes, a LOT more fun. Thanks for the set-up. I was 9 going on 10 in 1960, and we lived in West Hartford, CT. I wasn't aware of any controversy about this song, I just liked it. My sister, who is four years older, bought the 45 record and played it a lot. I don't think I understood why for a number of years. I think it interested me for both the melody and what I thought at the time was a somewhat sad and lonely feeling that it had to it around the edges.
